Our commitment to welfare
At Burnett Livestock and Realty we have a complete and total commitment to welfare at our cattle sales. We consider the welfare of all animals and people at our Biggenden Cattle Sale facility. We have a written policy to minimise accidents for our employees that includes induction and on-going training and safety briefings before each sale if issues arise. We currently exceed the ALPA guidelines for the operation of Saleyards.
We also have a written policy for the continuance of best practice standards in relation to cattle welfare. We know that calm, well maintained cattle achieve the best prices as they produce the best beef; but more than that we employ people that have a genuine passion for working in the cattle industry and we share that passion with our employees. Beef cattle are our business and we always ensure the welfare of the cattle at the Biggenden Cattle Sales. If you have any concerns about welfare at the Biggenden Cattle Saleyards then please contact the Burnett Livestock and Realty Director, Lance Whitaker on 0407 139 901 or after hours on (07) 4127 1217. Lance can also be reached by email on lance@burnettlr.com.au.
Is is fit to load?
The national guide to the selection of animals fit to transport is available for download by clicking this link - Is it fit to load?
Animal welfare legislation in Australia
Each state and territory has its own animal welfare Act and accompanying regulations that affect people who own or work with animals including farmers, livestock transporters, livestock exporters, saleyards personnel and processors.
Under these acts it is an offence to transport, confine, restrain or catch an animal in a way that causes, or is likely to cause, it necessary harm.
Ensure that your animals are 'fit to load' by using this guide when transporting to saleyards, abbattoirs or any other destination.
