Burnett Livestock & Realty $3000 Scholarship

Newspapers in the Wide Bay Burnett helped promote the launch of our 2009 scholarship on Thursday 18th September.

Burnett Livestock & Realty $3000 Scholarship

Burnett Livestock & Realty is putting its money behind the Wide Bay Burnett’s young people with a $3000 scholarship for a local to attend an Australian Agricultural College campus in 2009. The scholarship, in its first year, will assist a local person to study a beef cattle course and provide valuable work experience from the Biggenden office.

Director of Burnett Livestock & Realty, Lance Whitaker, said the scholarship was the company’s way of investing in the future of the region’s cattle industry. “It is important to us to share our commitment to learning with others and help a young person into the industry” Lance Whitaker said. Mr Whitaker said the work experience would provide a hands-on opportunity at the Biggenden Saleyards as well as linking the successful applicant with key cattle industry figures.

Mr Whitaker and his wife Stephanie both attended the Emerald Agricultural College campus in the early 1990’s and believe the scholarship could mean the difference in affordability of the course for a young person.

To apply people must be residents of the Wide Bay Burnett region and show a commitment to the cattle industry. For a full application package people should contact Stephanie Whitaker on 41271277 or email steph@burnettlr.com.au. Applications close 18th November 2008.

Top Prices at Biggenden Saleyards - Our recent good prices have been recorded in the Central and Burnett Times on 4th September 2008.

"Quality yardings of cattle at the Biggenden Cattle Saleyards have resulted in excellent prices for producers in August.  Cents per kilo prices (average) for all cattle sold at Biggenden have been in excess of southern and northern competitor saleyards by up to 6%.  Lance Whitaker, Director of Burnett Livestock & Realty which own the Biggenden Saleyards said that “solid results for August mean good returns for local producers”.

Recent fluctuations in the Australian dollar and increased international competition have placed pressure on local producers to perform.  Local Burnett producers have answered these increased pressures with quality cattle resulting in excellent returns for August.  “Quality steers, heifers and cows at Biggenden Saleyards have produced the premium of 6% over competitor saleyards in August” said Lance Whitaker.

The 12th Annual Biggenden Bull Sale will be held at the Biggenden Saleyards on Saturday, 6th September with the sale commencing at 10am."

FULL LANEWAYS FOR BIGGENDEN WEANERS

The recent Weaner Sale at the Biggenden Cattle Saleyards saw full laneways.  The sale attracted a strong buying panel including local re-stockers.  Heifers were dear and attracted a lot of attention from meatworks buyers.  This caused local re-stockers to bid over the head to secure a sale.

Brad Hanson, who judged the sale, said that “overall quality was very good and steers at 200-220kg were excellent buying with the better end of the steers making good money” at the sale.

The winner of the Championship Pen was Ron Kirk and Family, Gayndah.  Mr & Mrs Kirk took home the Morrisey Calf Cradle, sponsored by Burnett Livestock & Realty, for an outstanding pen of Charbray heifers.  Brad Hanson also said that Burnett Livestock & Realty, agents for the

Biggenden Cattle Sale Yards, continue to offer “good (Championship) prizes that are something decent for producers” at their special sales.

A total yarding of 1544 was achieved for the day with the price highlights being $605.94 for steers 280-380kg.

Burnett Livestock & Realty’s next Specialist Sale is the Female Sale on 20th November.
