Fit To Load Guidelines
Biggenden Saleyards complies with the Fit To Load Guidelines published by Meat and Livestock Australia. Under these guidelines we are only able to accept cattle for sale if they are fit to travel.
Ask these questions before you load any animal for transport:
- Can it walk normally and bear weight on all four legs?
- Is it free from visible disease or injury?
- Can it keep up with the mob at both loading and unloading?
- Can it see out of at least one eye?
- Is it late in pregnancy?
- Is it a newborn or young animal that requires special consideration?
If in doubt leave it out. If you have questions about a beast’s suitability for the saleyards call Lance Whitaker on 0407 139901 or your local stock inspector. To download a copy of the Fit To Load Guidelines click on the picture below:

Buffalo fly control in cattle
Buffalo fly are starting to become a real problem for cattle and producers. It affects productivity and health and can pose as a welfare issue. The following information is from the Qld Department of Primary Industry website and is meant as a guide only. If using chemical to control buffalo fly please be aware of chemical withholding periods and export slaughter intervals. Only use products that are meant for use on cattle as other products could have residue issues for you and your property.
Control strategies
The current buffalo fly control strategies aim to:
- reduce buffalo fly numbers to acceptable levels to prevent production loss
- provide for welfare considerations
- minimise chemical residue risks
- reduce the reliance on chemicals by utilising control with alternative methods
- target treatment costs and consider alternative treatments for different herd groups.
Available options
Using non-chemical control wherever possible
Control fly without chemicals such as the Buffalo Fly Tunnel Trap, dung beetles and tolerating some fly burdens will help to minimise resistance problems and reduce possible residue risks.
For where chemical control is necessary
Monitor fly numbers. Also, delay treatment of beef cattle until fly worry is obvious on the focus animals (those most susceptible to flies, such as bulls) or when animals are carrying in excess of 200 flies per animal (100 per side). High producing dairy cattle may require treatment at lower levels of infestation.
Using self treatment methods
Use the effective OP chemicals in backrubbers or insecticidal ear tags during the peak buffalo fly season.
Using OP Sprays
OP chemicals can be utilised for opportunistic spray treatments when cattle are in yards for other husbandry purposes. They may also be required if there are excessive fly numbers on cattle prior to commencing or following self-treatment control methods.
